California Same Marriage Lift?

What exactly happened today? Did they just repeal Prop 8? So is Same Marriage now legal? Because I was reading the articles in the Los Angeles and New York times and it seemed like the lift wasn't permanent or that "it is far from over." What happened today then? And I also heard that it still has to go to supreme court.
