Tips for a beginner golfer?

I am trying to learn to play golf, my husband enjoys it but i am horrible! Anyone have any tips to help me out? I have a full set of clubs, but i tend to stand up to straight when hitting the ball, could they be to short? I am 5'5 if that helps. When i can make contact i can hit fairly well but its the hitting it part i have trouble with, espically on the fairways. Any tips would be helpful, because i really want to learn to play.
