Do i need to lift my bike to tighten the chain?

im going to tighten my chain on a 1992 zxr ninja and im wondering if i should have the bike lifted up or if i can tighten the chain with the bike jus sittin on the ground? this is my first street bike, i used to tighten my dirtbike chains with the bike sitting on the ground... jus wonderin if theres a problem with doin that on a street bike. thanks
