Is it possible to enlarge an existing slab foundation? We want to enlarge an existing room on our house.?

Can we just "add on" to the existing foundation? Will the tiny space (if any) between the existing and newly poured slabs cause problems in the future? What other caveats are there to consider? Thanks for any info!
