How do I dig window wells?

I have to dig 4 window wells around my house, then need to use the soil to increase the grade around the house so that water slopes away more efficienctly. I've seen a few reports on how to dig window wells. Is there a specific standard to do so? There is no drainage pipe around the building, and I don't want to try to tap into the main.
