Do you do this too: criticize/chastise your own community, but become a bit defensive if others do it?

I am Texan, and often attack my state's policies, cultural trends etc., but I am sensitive when non-Texans make fun of Texas. The same holds true with other societies/communties I belong to. I can call American society "prudish," but I generally get a bit defensive if a European or Australian person does this.....Why do I/we do this?
